A leading Indian hotel firm, Mfar Group of Hotels, owned by Dr P Mohammed Ali of Galfar, will invest $150 million to develop a high end resort for well-heeled tourists in Maldives.

The Mfar Group of Hotels, which has around 700 rooms altogether in India and Oman, has acquired an island for building the resort. The company last week acquired an island for building the resort, which is 30 minutes by boat from the international airport.

Galfar managing director gets prestigious award

Muscat: OMAN-BASED entrepreneur Dr P Mohammed Ali, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of Galfar Engineering and Contracting, was recently honoured by the Indian President Pranab Mukherjee in Kochi on the Pravasi Bharat Divas. He was the first in the Indian diaspora to receive Pravasi Bharatiya Samman in 2004.

Kochi: Managing Director of Galfar Engineering and Contracting Co. Dr P. Mohamed Ali was honoured by the president of India Pranab Mukherjee at Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2013 at Hotel Le Meridien Kochi, Kerala, India on January 9.

As the founder of Galfar Engineering and Contracting Co, Dr Ali has earned his stripes as one of the Gulf's leading entrepreneurs. From its start in 1972, the firm has grown into the single largest private sector employer in Oman. Outside of his business interests, Dr Ali is the founder of the Oman Petroleum Alliance and the former vice chairman of the state-backed Omanisation Joint Committee.

His charitable works include founding the PM Foundation, which promotes education in rural Indian communities, and being chief patron of the Talikulam Vikas Trust.

Dr Ali has been awarded the Oman Civil Order for his services to the Sultanate and in 2004 Pravasi Bharatiya Divas he received the coveted Outstanding Non-Resident Indian award.
